I-25 MVA/Haz-Mat
Posted On: Nov 08, 2018

At 8:48 p.m. on Sunday November 4th, Local 2164 members responded to a semi accident on the northbound off-ramp from I-25 to Belleview Avenue in Greenwood Village. The semi struck a highway barrier resulting in a violent crash that ejected the motor and destroyed the truck. Miraculously the driver safely exited the cab uninjured and no other vehicles were involved.

With the axles ripped away and the frame rails separated, members used stabilizers to prevent the truck cab from tipping over. The driver side fuel tank was torn open and spilled a large quantity of diesel that began flowing into the storm drains. Members stood ready with a hose line in case the flammable liquid ignited, and they used absorbent booms and dirt to prevent the spill from getting any worse. Absorbent was also spread across the scene to soak up motor oil and other mechanical fluids that leaked. The SMFR Hazardous Materials Team electrically grounded the truck, drilled a hole in the remaining saddle tank and used a siphon to offload the remaining fuel into barrels.

2164 members were on scene for nearly 4 hours when clean-up operations were turned over to Greenwood Village.
