Parker Road and Lewiston MVA
Posted On: May 11, 2018

At 12:56 on Friday May 11th, Local 2164 members responded to a non-injury accident in the northbound lanes of Parker Road at Lewiston Way. A flatbed semi was hauling 2 - 10,000-pound concrete pipe sections when it came to a sudden stop at the intersection. One pipe rolled forward and struck the cab of the truck, rupturing a hydraulic fluid tank, which spilled liquid onto the road. Although the cab was seriously damaged, the driver was uninjured. The second section of pipe rolled off the trailer and landed in a lane of traffic. Thankfully no motorists were close enough to be crushed or struck. The Hazardous Materials Unit was called to the scene and members used absorbent to clean up the mess. While crews were working, a 2-car collision occurred in the southbound lanes of Parker Road adjacent to the first scene. Members rushed across the street to check on the drivers and confirmed that no one was injured. Several lanes of traffic were closed in both directions, which created a significant traffic jam. Members remained on scene while a tractor was used to off-load the concrete pipes and move them to safer location. After the absorbent was swept up, the semi was towed away and SMFR left the scene just after 4 p.m.
