I-25 MVA with Haz-Mat
Updated On: Apr 25, 2018

At 12:44 on Friday, April 20th - Engine 36, Medic 36 and Engine 44 responded to a vehicle accident on the shoulder of northbound I-25, one mile south of Ridgegate Parkway. A box truck collided with the concrete barrier, which caused a 110-gallon diesel tank in the cargo area to rupture and leak. The hydraulic rear door controls were damaged in the accident and there was no easy way to gain access to the fuel tank. SMFR’s Hazardous Materials Team, Technical Rescue Team and Fleet Services Bureau all responded to help mitigate the challenges. Fleet Service Technicians are experts in solving mechanical problems and were able to release the hydraulics while the crew of Rescue 34 prevented the heavy door from falling too quickly and causing more damage. SMFR and State Patrol Haz-Mat Technicians used a siphon to off-load the diesel into a storage drum while other members contained and absorbed the spilled fuel on the highway. The driver was evaluated by paramedics on scene was not injured. 2 lanes of I-25 were closed for over 2 hours.
