Highway 67 MVA with Extrication
Posted On: Jul 29, 2018

At 10:03 p.m. on Monday July 23, 2018, Local 2164 and 4116 members responded to a mutual aid assist with West Douglas County Fire District for vehicle accident requiring technical rescue on Highway 67 just west of Oak Valley Road. When West Douglas Firefighters arrived they found a cement truck down a steep embankment with heavy damage and used ropes to descend down. Sadly, once crews were able to access the truck it was determined that the single occupant did not survive the crash. The rescue efforts turned into a recovery operation that took several hours to complete. A chainsaw was needed to clear vegetation so Firefighters had space to work with their specialized vehicle stabilization and extrication equipment. Those heavy items were lowered down from the highway in a Stokes Basket with a rope pulley system. The delicate extrication was exhausting and took 3 hours and 10 minutes to complete, and then the truck was removed from the valley at 4:45 a.m. Colorado State Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
